Introducing 'Sam's Fifth Avenue'
You've might've noticed a bit of a change around my blog. "Wandering Grad" has become "Sam's Fifth Avenue!" So why the name and logo change? I chose Wandering Grad as my title back at the end of 2013 when I wasn't necessarily thinking I would turn this blog into a major part of my life. I thought it would just be a place I could write about the grad school process, and then update my family and friends on where I've been traveling to.
It became quite apparent after a few months in that Wandering Grad was more than just a personal place, but a website to post all the wonderful parts of my life that I do want to share with the world. I was a "Wandering Grad," so the name made sense. Not only was I a recent college graduate, but I was about to enter grad school. Now that I am nearing the end of my course (sort of... classes end April 1, and the summer is time to finish my dissertation), I felt that the word "Grad" was too specific towards the areas I want to cover.
I began to then analyse what things I do want to continue writing about. "Wandering" lends too much towards just travel writing, and I feel that I have other areas of expertise that I would like to cover in the lifestyle realm. Plus, as of the end of April, I will be living in New York City, and will have much less time (and money) to be able to wander as I am now.
Thus, "Sam's Fifth Avenue" was born. It's obviously a play on the name, "Saks Fifth Avenue," which is a well-known New York City department store. Fifth Avenue, in general, is a very famous thoroughfare in NYC, known for its shopping and fashion. And moving to New York is the 5th avenue my life has taken me on. My first major move was when I went away to college in 2009. I then made a big step again when I studied abroad in England in 2011. After college, in 2013, I moved my entire life to Los Angeles, even if it was only for a brief time. And the most recent is, of course, last September when I became an expat in London. New York is the fifth major life path I've taken, and I think the title is very fitting for this new journey.
So what does this mean in terms of change for the blog content? Not much! I will still be writing about travel, still posting photographs, still covering lifestyle interests (fashion, events, food, books, etc.), but my scope will be set a bit wider than before, and it will allow for me to also post opinion pieces on pop culture and internet trends that I want to comment on. I hope you still follow me on this fabulous journey of my life, no matter where it takes me.
